Dreams are a natural experience of Body, Heart and Imagination. As we open to the dream realm, dream metaphors become living presences, not just symbols. We encounter dream figures who inspire, terrify, soothe and challenge us to live from a place of deep feeling, and reconnect us to the World of Spirit and Imagination. Our bodies produces many healing agents:Anticoagulant molecules stop us from bleeding, Interferons fight infections, Opiates soothe our pain. Our bodies also produces images. These images have the power to heal us, and rebalance us no less than their molecular cousins. These images may come to us spontaneously during waking hours, and they also come in our dreams. Over the last 20 years, investigators have found ways to measure the impact of images on our physiology and our emotions. We know that images affect our heart rate, blood pressure, our mood, and even our immunity . Guided imagery is used to enhance music and sports performance, as an adjunct to cancer treatment, to relieve depression and anxiety, and even in ICU settings, to speed recovery. Dreams also shift our physiology, expand our emotional range, change our relationships and introduce us to a deeper, richer spiritual life. Our body titrates the images in our dreams as precisely as the molecules running through our bloodstream. More than a message, dreams are a medicine . We don’t need to know the details of painting to be inspired and enlivened by a great work of art and we don’t have to fully understand the mechanisms of our dreams in order to use them to heal and experience our living more deeply.
